You do indeed need thread support. You'd need to install either

xfree86 and xfree86-shlibs (XFree86-4.3)

or

xfree86-base-threaded, xfree86-base-threaded-shlibs, xfree86-rootless-threaded, and xfree86-rootless-threaded-shlibs. (XFree86 4.2.1.1)

All are in the unstable tree.
