Take a look in the archives of this list. A few months ago I tried 
to answer this question. If you don't find it, I will try to find 
it here on my machine.

But in short. Apple's X11 has some special addings by apple and 
looks more like Aqua because of the quarz-wm windowmanager but it 
has for me and my german keyboard more problems with foreign 
keyboard layouts then Xfree86's one and it doesn't support thread 
libraries which you normally donnot notice until you need it. 
Second it is not totally free since quarz-wm only comes with 
Panther so does the final 1.0 but this is avaible via source code 
but without quarz-wm and with alternative windowmanagers it looks 
quite like the Xfree86 one.

Xfree86's one is totally free and behaves the same as on other 
plattform, there are not that much apple specific things in it and 
so more tips and tricks which work under other unix-like OSes work. 
Only missing thing on the mac is a configuration file like you have 
it on say linux.
