I've had on Jaguar what I consider an extremely stable and ideal setup - but was prepared for a few roadblocks upon upgrading to 10.3.

In 10.2 days, I would open XDarwin while in a Desktop Manager virtual window. This would use the "startkde" in my .xinitrc, and launch KDE full-screen (except for mac title bar - which showed the desktop manager options), and ran extremely well and fast, and I could simply select "desktop 1" and switch to "mac", or select "desktop 2" and switch back to KDE.

After upgrading to 10.3, I was prepared for a few issues, but have gotten further than I expected, so my issue seems more detailed, so I can finally write for assistance. Initially, after upgrading, XDarwin would simply fail to launch (quit), and same with Apple's X11. Finally, I opened Fink, and painfully spent a few days updating everything (would fail, I'd fix app causing a fail, and continue until everything was done). I then deleted my X11 preferences, and upon launch of Apple's X11, was asked if I want to "ignore" my .xinitrc, and upon doing so, it finally didn't quit and I was successfully in XTerm. Upon a test, Gimp opened and worked, Bluefish opened and worked, etc.

I ran "startkde" in XTerm, which seemed to boot beautifully, even had the KDE startup "song" play for the first time, but once KDE fully loaded, I couldn't interact with any windows. The KDE menu won't respond to mouse input, but everything in KDE appears to be running (clock changes appropriately), and I also lose the ability to interact with the XTerm window which launched KDE. When I move the mouse over the 10.3 window controls (title bar controls which previously used a KDE theme under XDarwin, but now use the standard window controls under X11), they do not respond or change color, but I can Command click on KDE desktop to see an appropriate KDE menu, and I can open something from that menu, but won't be able to interact with it after it's running.

Hoping this sounds familiar or means something to someone. I can't believe how close I've got this thing to how it was under 10.2. Of course, I realize it's running under Apple's X11 on 10.3, as opposed to XDarwin under 10.2. XDarwin is not behaving very stable, so if possible, I'd like to remain with Apple's X11.

THANKS!
