[Fink-beginners] x11 and panther

Hi,
I am somewhat new to fink and am having trouble getting it to run under Panther. I have tried to get the program xfig using FinkCommander and first received an error referring to the need to reinstall xfree86 (sorry, I don't remember the exact wording). I came across a few websites including

and followed the given instructions. When I attempt to run, in FinkCommander, Binary->Dist-Upgrade packages, I get the following error:

dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove system-xfree86 which isn't installed.
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove system-xfree86-shlibs which isn't installed.
Setting up xfree86 (4.3.0-14) ...
ERROR: /etc/X11 exists, but is not a symlink to /usr/X11R6/etc.
dpkg: error processing xfree86 (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
xfree86
E: Sub-process /sw/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)


I've followed the advice given by Fink's FAQ

http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-packages.php#apple-x11-wants-xfree86

and everything, including system-xfree86 is listed as being installed ok.


Does anyone know what I can do? Would I be better off reinstalling X11 and Fink?
