If you are using the builtin X11 with Panther, then you are supposed to have a "system-xfree86" virtual package. Check this by running "fink-virtual-pkgs". If you do have such a virtual package, then Fink won't let you install XFree86 over your existing X11.

If you want to install XFree86 with Fink, you need to install the xfree86 package (not xfree86-base or xfree86-base-threaded--they don't actually work on Panther). You'll need to remove your Apple X11 before you do this:

http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/inst-xfree86.php#switching-x11

(the relevant part is at the bottom).

R isn't there because it hasn't been ported to Panther yet.

hi,
I would like to install x11 using fink. Before making any mistake I'd
like to know which of the several packages I should install. I ask
because on my old G4 I could not install xbase, but rather I had to
install a version of it that acknowledged I had installed x11
independently of fink. Now, doesn't Panther come already with x11? If so
which one is the right choice?
Further I cannot find R in the sci section of the package list.
Thanks
Edo
