Does the 5.5.8 beta build for you on your Mac?  If so, then it should
be possible for you to make up a package description file that will
install it under Fink.  It's not too hard.

These lists seem to be full of posts from people trying to build and install
these packages receiving all sorts of cryptic errors and missing components.
That's why I really like FINK. Also, I need the [no X11 required] version
which is not mentioned anywhere on the ImageMagick web site. Can a package
description file be used with a binary distribution? If so, how would that
be done and is there doc or tutorial that I can read? Thanks for your

The package descriptions only work with source files--they do the configuration that goes in to the binaries. One example is, in fact, the no-X11 option. An option such as "--no-x11" or something similar is given to the configuration script, and then the build process skips doing anything that needs X11.


I've been meaning to write up a tutorial on how to play around with the package description files for builds from source, but my day job keeps getting in the way.
