Hi Boris,
do you need the /Applications/BBEdit Lite 6.1 in your path? Unix does not like spaces in path names at all. Either remove this part from your path or rename the BBEdit directory to something which without spaces. I guess that the PATH gets set in your .tcshrc.
Concerning your shell: if you upgrade to Panther from Jaguar and keep your user, then you keep also the old shell. New users should get bash by default. If you want to change your shell, you can do so with Netinfo Manager which is found in the Applications/Utilities directory. The Apple Terminal and X11 server can override the default shell, too. Check their Preferences.

hi remi
it gives
/Applications/BBEdit Lite 6.1:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
when i do echo $SHELL, it gives /bin/tcsh, while i thought panther would have bash as the default shell...

My first guess is that you have some spaces in your PATH. What gives 'printenv PATH'?

hi everyone,
a few days ago, i installed panther. today, i deleted the /sw directory, and installed fink using the .dmg install package. the startup command at the end gave me this message:
------
I will append a line "source /sw/bin/init.csh" to the file .tcshrc in your home directory.
If you don't want me to do this, you can answer "no" here and do it later manually. Otherwise answer "yes".
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] Y
Done. Verifying... tcsh: if: Expression Syntax. Hmm. I tried my best, but it still doesn't work. The code I put into .tcshrc has no effect. Please check your tcsh startup scripts. Perhaps there is some other file like /Users/bmobile/.login that resets the PATH after .tcshrc is executed. Bye.

whenever i delete the "source /sw/bin/init.csh" line from the .tcshrc file, there are no error messages. apparently there is an error in the init.csh script? also, i read on the site that on panther 10.3, the standard shell should be bash. on my installation, however, it is tcsh...
anyone with a solution to this one?
thanks boris
