Kind forum members,

The closer one gets to the palace gates, the louder the lions roar.

Recap:
Did complete XCode Tools from Apple Developer site.
Did ethereal install with dependencies.
I THOUGHT I had X installed, it turns out I did NOT. Or did I? In a moment of D'OH! Homer-like clarity I poked around my hard drive, couldn't FIND any X11 directories, etc ANYWHERE. Hmm....what's UP here? I coulda SWORN that installing ethereal had indicated it was installing Xfree86 to solve dependencies. It chugged along long enough compiling all sorts of X-looking stuff...

I had taken the defaults (Xfree86 libraries, clients, etc, choice 1 I recall?) as ethereal installed...
But no X, or so it would appear. So I started installing the other X choices in Fink Commander. XFree86, XFree86 shlibs, compiled (yawn) for a few hours, and at some point it finished. I tried to execute ethereal (as my email related).

Then I noticed my Appleworks had a ? question mark ? in the icon and no longer worked. What the heck? I slowly realized was likely hosed beyond what anyone could reasonably help back me out of. Stuff had *happened*, and i couldn't articulate how i'd gotten there. I knew i'd gone over the edge of a slippery slope, hard to return from for a n00b.

I backed up my data and restored my Powerbook. Had the foresight to install Apple X11 when i saw it was a choice, and between the manuals (which i'll read again and AGAIN) and the advice from Those Who Went Before maybe i'll get it right this time. ARGH!

So: to do..

-Install XCode Tools --complete w/ gcc 3.3, MacOSX10.3 SDK's, X11 stuff, etc.
-Install Fink
-Install ethereal --accept defaults on dependencies? Or did i fall into a gotcha on this?? Now that Apple X11 installed, will dependencies adjust?
-Launch X11 (its a choice now)
-Run ethereal

Live and learn.

I am at once humbled by my own shortcomings, and thankful for the gracious community that has patiently helped me (and hopefully others). I'll report success --failure is not an option-- when it happens.

Thanks to Martin, Eric, Hisashi, Alexander and Benjamin. I really try and not be a bonehead, but everyone's a n00b somewhere.

many thanks, and warm regards,

Eric Lecht
