Here's my suggestion:

1) Do the OS (OK that's obvious), using a custom install to make sure the BSD subsystem gets installed (along with anything else you want). If you want X11, make sure to install it, too. You can do it now or wait--it shouldn't matter.
2) Install Fink. Once you've done this, you can throw Fink Commander on like any other application.
3) When you've got Fink going, run "fink-virtual-pkgs" in a Terminal window to make sure that the installer put in all of your X11 files--sometimes it doesn't. If you see "system-xfree86" you're set. If not, then you need to reinstall X11. Here's the FAQ item on this:

3) Reintroduce your application software -- I advocate doing this last, in case you have problems with Fink.

I've been scrounging the net for information but seem to have ended up more
confused. I'm about to upgrade to Panther from 10.2.8. My intent is to do a
clean install, possibly even formatting the partition. Afterwards I want to
install Fink. What order should I do this in? ie do I need to install X11
and BSD and... SDK? Fink? Fink Commander? Should I install all system
components before reintroducing my application software? What is the
*ideal* way to go about this?

I had thought of playing around with Fink with 10.2.8 but I seem to have
really messed up -- MissingMediaBurner turned into really missing the CD
burner, finding burner but now Toast locks up, etc. Even slower Finder, if
that was possible.

If someone could point me to a step-by-step current and easily understood
(ie less techno-jargon to start with) FAQ, I'd be appreciative.

Thanks

Pete.
