I think you're right--I just tried to do a fetch

I tried to remove the version 1.8 of automake(the first I got installed, before the attempt to install KDE ), and well it was removed, with the installation of the 1.6 version, then it was archived. I tried to remove the configuration files of the 1.8 ver. with 'fink purge automake1.8', but it print that the pakage is not installed(eventough I have the 'archived' status of the package in the fink comander).

'archived' means you have a .deb file for the package on your system, ready to be reinstalled if needed. It's fine.

then I try to 'upgrade' the automake1.6.3-3 to 1.6.3-5 and I think that perhaps the problem is not in 'automake1.6.3-3'(the one I got installed), but the upgrading package 'automake1.6.3-5'.
I got the same message:

Yes, that seems right.

The following package will be installed or updated:
automake
Failed: file download failed for automake-1.6.3.tar.gz of package automake-1.6.3-5

I just tried "fink fetch automake1.6" and got the following possibly relevant information:

$ fink fetch automake1.6
/usr/bin/sudo /sw/bin/fink  fetch automake1.6
Information about 3100 packages read in 6 seconds.

(1) Delete it and download again
(2) Assume it is a partial download and try to continue
(3) Don't download, use existing file

The file "automake-1.6.3.tar.bz2" already exists, how do you want to proceed?

(I'm on Panther, so my .info file may be different). It may be that there isn't a .tar.gz file, but only a .tar.bz2. Check out the .info file for automake1.6 on your system and see what the Source: line says.

anyway I dont know, how can I just make KDE get installed properly?
should I remove the automake1.6 and start without any automake?
