Now I just need to know what is the best way to go about linking them properly for gcc 3.3 to use, any suggestions?

This is the old confusion between Fink packages and XEmacs packages. The Fink xemacs-sumo package says it contains "All xemacs packages together". This means packages in the XEmacs sense, like auctex, calc, gnus, w3, and so on. The Fink package xemacs that contains the xemacs executable has to be installed separately.
Concerning your compiler problem: If you really don't have /usr/lib/crt1.o, you will not be able to compile. In the original Panther, this file was installed by the Essentials.pkg, not by the DevSDK.pkg. In later versions of the Xcode tools, the file migrated to DevSDK.pkg. So if you try to reinstall the DevSDK.pkg from the original Xcode CD, you won't get this file. If you update to Xcode-1.1 or Xcode-1.2, you will get it from DevSDK.pkg. You might need to install DevSDK.pkg twice, because Apple's Installer.app sometimes doesn't understand that files can move from one package to another.
