Thank you for your replies. I did check the fink FAQ today and found the discussion. I followed the instructions, but I got a "No packages to install." message for both system-xfree86 and system-xfree86-shilibs. It also claims taht xfree86 and xfree86-shlibs are archived, but I don't know if that makes a difference.
