Thank you for your replies. I did check the fink FAQ today and found
the discussion. I followed the instructions, but I got a "No packages
to install." message for both system-xfree86 and
system-xfree86-shilibs.

These are virtual packages which you can't install yourself. Which FAQ entry did you read?

It also claims taht xfree86 and xfree86-shlibs
are archived, but I don't know if that makes a difference.

No, this just means that they were built from source but not installed.

Sincerely Yours,
Kevin Callanan

PS my e-mail was forwarded and I completed the resubscription process
within 5 minutes of unsubscribing, so I don't think I missed anything.
It is possible though.

In gmane.os.apple.fink.beginners, you said:
The install of eterm failed because of the xfree86 issue. (Sorry, I
also had to unsubscribe and resubscribe under a different e-mail
address for a silly reason).

You can read the archives of the fink mailing lists via the web or a USENET newsreader. There's more info under the "Mailing Lists" tab on the main Fink webpage.

At this point I am completely at a loss
as to what to do. This issue is extremely frustrating, but is the kind
of issue you would expect someone to have noticed and fixed somehow.

Save your exasperation. Given that you admit you had to leave for a bit, maybe someone answered while you were gone? Or since you think it's a question people have asked before, did you look in the Fink FAQ?
