Two issues:
1) dcgui-qt works fine with Apple's X11. If anything in fink ever asks you to install Xfree even though you have apple's X11 installed, see <http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-packages.php?phpLang=en#apple-x11-wants-xfree86>
2) "cannot connect to x server" sounds like you hadn't started Xfree86/X11. Start that first, and then run the command 'dcgui-qt' from an xterm.
