Hi

I have switched to a new G4 Ibook and under 10.3.5, have installed the recommended Fink, gimp, emacs21, texmacs etc with no problems. I have now also installed ivtools from source, which went without any hitches, However I get the "cant open DISPLAY" message when I try to open any of the ivtools apps, all the other non-ivtools apps open OK from X11-xterm. I have checked with "set" that DISPLAY is set to :0.0, and "am running bash" have '""export DISPLAY=":0.0""" in the xinitrc file. I have also tried he "{{ -z -----export ---- " recommendation line in a ",bashrc" file in my home directory as in the FAQ on this subject,, but also to no avail.

Notably if I use "startx" in the terminal, ivtools apps open but of course with the bare "X" server, and I am not keen to continue with that!

I don't know what ivtools are, but from what you write it is not clear whether you have X11 running when you get the error or not. On one hand you say that you start other applications from X11-xterm, so X11 is running there, on the other hand you talk about typing startx in the Terminal, so X11 is not running when you do this.

You need to start X11 first, usually by double-clicking on the X11.app icon, before running applications that use X11. If you want to use command line only, run "open-x11 whatever". This starts X11 and sets DISPLAY before running whatever. Don't use startx.
