so, some fonts don't cause errors, some do. but I don't understand the source of the problem. if peripheral, how can this step be bypassed in the installation?

I have release 040527-2. FinkCommmander shows 021223-1 as the latest stable version. should I revert to that (and if so, how is this to be done? what is the syntax? something like 'fink install fondu-021223-1'?)?
You could do just that, or if you want the (working) unstable version, you can update (really downgrade) the package--the current unstable version is 1:030428-1.

yields "Failed: no matching version found for fondu".
You don't have the unstable tree turned on--not a problem!
I now used fink install fondu-021223-1 which was ok.
'fink install abiword' is now under way again and indeed does not abort at the same point than before. so that problem seems to be indeed caused by a 'too' new fondu. question: I understand the problem is already known to the maintainer/author?

Yes, which is why the version you had before isn't in the stable tree, and why the unstable version has been downgraded. I'm not sure how you got the version you had.
