I realized that abiword depends on applesystemfonts which was installed along with abiword by fink. I can't remove applesystemfonts w/o removing abiword, which seems like the wrong direction I want to be going.
No, you can't remove it with fink, but I think you have a problem that will not be fixed by just using the fink package manager to remove and reinstall packages. You have to dig deeper, for example by manually moving the directory /sw/lib/X11/fonts/applettf out of the way and then replacing it with an empty copy into which you put back one by one the fonts that were there originally. Same for konsole.
