Thanks in advance Alexander
I figured out from the FAQ that i needed to update XFree86 for 10.3 so I did: fink update xfree86 (see below)
I also found that the command: ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/X*
gave:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2021848 Oct 9 16:46 /usr/X11R6/bin/X
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 3669792 Mar 31 2004 /usr/X11R6/bin/XDarwin
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 48 Mar 31 2004 /usr/X11R6/bin/XDarwinQuartz -> /Applications/XDarwin.app/Contents/MacOS/XDarwin
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 20596 Oct 9 14:31 /usr/X11R6/bin/XDarwinStartup
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 27494 Sep 14 2003 /usr/X11R6/bin/Xmark
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 3406280 Oct 9 16:46 /usr/X11R6/bin/Xnest
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 1999936 Oct 9 16:46 /usr/X11R6/bin/Xprt
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2021848 Oct 9 16:46 /usr/X11R6/bin/Xquartz
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 3675552 Oct 9 16:46 /usr/X11R6/bin/Xvfb
so, as per the FAQ, I am missing some symlinks?

Fink downloaded the needed packages for XFree86 and upon installing ended up with:
<x-tad-smaller>
Setting up xfree86 (4.4.0-13) ...
ERROR: /etc/X11 exists, but is not a symlink to /usr/X11R6/etc.

Did you just move XDarwin, or did you remove all of XFree86:

sudo rm -rf /usr/X11R6 /etc/X11

Try doing that command again, and then:

1) Reinstall Apple's X11 from Panther Disk 3

or

2) Install XFree86 (not just the XDarwin application) or X.org from Fink (the latter is only in unstable).

What I think might have happened to you is that XFree86 on Jaguar used a keymapping file which was no longer included with Panther, so if you had a Jaguar version of XFree86 it wouldn't work after an OS upgrade.

Hello alexander,
I installed Apple's X11 from the install disc 3. I moved XDarwin out of the way and tried to startx:

tcsh: defaultclientargs=: Command not found.

Putting XDarwin back into applications and trying to startx returns the same result. Now what?
I apologize for my denseness but how do I tell startx to find Apples's version?
Thanks

Thanks Alexander,
XFee86, which I installed to solve problems w/ KDE that I discussed with you earlier this year. I am installing X11 now.

Hello,
I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to OSX10.3. All seems to have gone well except that I cannot "startx" in terminal:

Fatal server error:
Could not find keymapping file USA.keymapping.

This is possibly it. What version of X11 (Apple's or XFree86) do you have installed?

OsVendorFatalError
AbortDDX
Quitting XDarwin...
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I looked in FAQ and found the 2nd error and I do have the correct .xinitrc file. As far as keymapping and errno 3 ???

Thanks for the help in advance

Brian
