Other than tinkering with X11, are their certain applications that are only available for X11 that made you decide to install and use it?
To learn the Unix side of Mac OS X.

Are there others here who use the X11 system more than OS X itself?
Yes, 98% of the time on X11. Actually I use Mac OS X, when either there is no equivalent on X11, or when the Mac OS X application is more convenient to me, or to avoid pay for an application whose free equivalent exists on X11. That is: all the network thing, Mail, Safari, AppleWorks, Preview, BBEdit and iXXX applications.
As of X11 applications, I use the whole docbook and tex stuff for documentation, nedit mainly to produce patches, gv to test pdf (though mainly preview), ImageMagick (the most) and gimp (just to cut parts of images) to manipulate images, dia to produce diagrams, xman to read the man pages, about any browser just to test the rendering of html/xml/php pages, ddd to debug, bluefish for about anything related to typing text, cssed to build stylesheets and search for string within files, conglomerate to build specifications, and a bunch of others from time to time.

I am still looking for what email application is available and is in Fink already to use. The couple I have seen did not work on my system. What email app are you using?
Mail from OSX, I found the ones on X11 rather poor designed or too complicated to use or not handling unicode correctly.
