Hi all,

Since the last security update, I've been having the problem with both xfontpath and xset.

I'd be surprised if this had worked before :-)

I have this set-up in my .xinitrc:

#Fontpath

xfontpath install applettf ghostscript

You don't need to run this every time you start X11. It is run once after the installation of the applettf and x-ghostscript-fonts packages, and this is sufficient.

xfontpath enable

This one is run at the start of your shell, by the /sw/etc/profile.d/xfontpath.sh script. You don't need to run it yourself, either.

but I get this message;

xfontpath: can't open `/sw/etc/xfontpath.conf.new'

This is because you try to run xfontpath as non-root. It is meant to be run as root, inside installation scripts.

and there is no xfontpath.conf.new.

Then, when I try to enable the path by

sudo xfontpath enable,

I get this message,

xset: bad font path element (#87), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
    Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

The most likely cause is either a bad fonts.dir file or a bad font. You can also try directly

 xset +fp /sw/lib/X11/fonts/ghostscript

you will probably get the same error message. Despite this message, the directory could have been added to the fontpath. In your case it hasn't.

Before giving further advice, one would have to know what versions of ghostscript, ghostscript-fonts and x-ghostscript-fonts you have installed.
