AKH,

Thank you .. When the next newbies FAQ goes out .. It might be very
helpful to add a couple of items:

- "THIS IS HOW YOU NEED TO BE" configuration wise before
adding anything .. a must do in this order list.
- Here are the commands gtk --version, glibs --version, gnome
--version, fink --version .. etc to see if you are ready.
Most / many of those dependency major modules are NOT
obvious how to discover which version is both present and
in users current path. Many of the discover version commands
run against a file that IS NOT the same name as the package..
at least that has been my experience with FreeBSD / BSD / Linux
- Probably a tree like mapping of how to get to the major destinations
under the Fink Tree ..

MY Question for the day .. Last I booted / logged in and my Aqua
came up .. my X11 starter / menu button came up ..
I have installed the GNOME Bundle .. no errors reported .. I have
gone off to the sourceforge..fink.. X11 xinitrc page ..

Is there a way without logging off I can exec any of the
contents of the planned ~/.xinitrc for rootless GNOME ..
_without_ installing that .xinitrc file in place to test ..

I guess I got GNOME 2.2 with Fink ..

To start GNOME 2.2 under Apple's X11, use the following sequence:

. /sw/bin/init.sh
quartz-wm --only-proxy &
metacity &
exec gnome-session

If I am then ugly .. I would not have to try to reboot in terminal mode
to undo the damage ???

Any one who has succeeded so far into your end of physics, must get tired of re-answering the same old questions. Have you ever thought to just in your signature block put one (1) to twenty-five (25) URL's to FAQ's with the good answer from last time someone stumbled on the same item.

So the URL / FAQ for Methods 1 and 2, rootless and full screen, the step-by-step cookbook is where?

I don't think we've got a current one--this is something that probably needs to go along with the overhaul of our "Running X11" document.

It's not that complicated in any case (I'll be pedantic so that I can grab this from the log to put in the docs later):

1) Set yourself up to use KDE or GNOME via a .xinitrc file (examples are given):

http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/run-xfree86.php#xinitrc

2) Run X11 (e.g. via the application icon)
a) If you're using Apple's X11, then it probably will default to rootless mode. In the Output pane of the Preferences, you just need to turn on the Full screen mode (and as it says on this pane you switch from Aqua to X11 via Command-option-A. You can switch from fullscreen to rootless while you're running.
b) If you're using XFree86 or X.org you will typically (unless a preference has been set to the contrary) get a dialog box that asks you which mode you want. For these two flavors of X11, you have to restart to switch between rootless and fullscreen mode.

This is really so good to be able to steal a little bit of the universal mind and implement it .. leaving with a feeling of having some fun and less bored than some of our average work days.

I hope the LDX works better than the super-collider, one of my ex-bosses relative non-successes. I guess I am glad I bailed out on physics. So much chance for great successes or great failures. Has LDX had a working scaled physical demo?

We've actually started running, and are moving towards our nominal parameters.
