database servers appear to be a bit different. In one of the places I was digging recently, the following worked for getting the server working:
If you don't use the Startup Item, enter the following command sequence:
shell> cd /sw
shell> sudo ./bin/mysqld_safe
(Enter your password, if necessary)
(Press Control-Z)
shell> bg
I used this incantation for MySQL 4.whatever installed via Fink. To
stop the server (apparently OSX provides no completely safe way to shut
the server down automatically on shutdown or reboot...) you need to use
mysqladmin (I think that's it. Can you tell I haven't done this much?).
