Whatever works. My box happens to be set up to use "open" as the Unix viewer for bitmaps, which in turn maps to Preview here. If you're using Apple's X11 there are is a known issue with calling external applications that are in the fink tree:

the imshow doesn't produce any output. No errors but simply nothing happens. Am i missing some fink package? Can someone test the commands on his own Mac?

It works here--on my machine the image popped up in Preview.
