P.S. I want to be clear that I am a professional project manager and have a

pursue the enjoyment of building, to a very small degree, my own software and
try to move the concept forward in anyway that I can. The feeling I get from
using software successfully installed via fink is much better than that from
writing a check for $350. I feel as if I know many members on the list and I
can only say that if this sort of project is possible through little more

so.
Thanks again,

This kind of points out a general motivation for Martin's comment: it's easy to render your OS nonfunctional by inadvertent deletion (the case in point is less severe, but the principle is the same). Therefore the Fink project doesn't officially endorse anything that involves mucking around under /usr (except if you switch X11s, but that's not our fault!), in large part because we know that many of our users use Fink-installed packages for their jobs--losing half a day to reinstall your OS is nonproductive at best (as I well know!).
It also makes it harder for us to diagnose problems when they're due to user-induced changes in the core system area.
