Fink 0.7.1 binary installed well. I have OS X 10.3.8. I used fink commander to install gimp binary and kde binary packages. I have Xcode 1.2 installed and Apple’s X11. X11 starts well. Gimp lots and works perfectly, though I have to type /sw/bin/gimp, not just gimp from anywhere.

Are you doing it from the X11 terminal?  There are known issues with how Apple's X11 ignores user environment settings.  From the Applications menu, change the Terminal item command to

xterm -ls

and that should fix it.

The problem is kde. /sw/bin/startkde started kde properly. The wizard worked fine, the desktop appeared, but then everything froze. I could move the mouse over kde desktop icons and descriptions would pop up. However, I could not activate anything from the start bar. Also, if Gimp was already running I could not activate or move any of it’s windows. The only thing I can do is quit X11. Any help would be great!

There is a known problem with the interaction between the version of KDE in the binary distribution and Apple's X11:

and use the second-to last example.
