I got this reply from xemacs.org:
Almost certainly a Fink or Apple bug, tell them about it. It seems
that recent updates to the X libraries are binary incompatible with
old builds.
Probably you can work around with
(setq progress-feedback-use-echo-area t)
in init.el.
That does, indeed, work around the problem.
Where do I report it, other than this list,?

Approximately since then whenever I attempt to open some files (not
all files, I think) xemacs crashes while fontifying the file.
I tried starting with xemacs -q (no init file) and can open, for
instance init.el, but not custom.el?
I did set debug--on-error, but it still goes away.
I sent a bug report to [EMAIL PROTECTED] If it would be
helpful, I can send it to you, too. It includes the output of a lisp
dump and the CrashReporter dump.
For what it's worth, the Carbonized GnuEmacs.app is NOT crashing (at
least not yet).
I'm using the "standard" Apple X11 -- I have been seeing plenty o
xterm crashes...
Do we need a new xemacs-sumo build in the stable tree?
