Yes, very sorry about that.... I realized almost immediately I sent
it that I had omitted those details, but then didn't get back to it
to update.
Anyway I have MacOS X 10.4.1 and am using the following fink:
Package manager version: 0.23.10
Distribution version: 0.8.0
I moved my /sw directory to a different location (/swold if that is
relevant) and installed the new fink 0.8.0 from disk image.
I then tried a variety of different things, each time deleting /sw
and reinstalling fink if there was a failure.
(1) fink install pari-gp
It then did a binary install, which was quite quick (one or two
minutes) and only told me about one or two other packages (emacsen).
When installed, and attempting to run it, I just got - in its
entirety - the error message
$ gp
Reading GPRC: /sw/etc/gprc ...Done.
Trace/BPT trap
Nothing else - the prompt simply returned.
(2) fink --no-use-binary-dist install pari-gp
It then spent about 2-3 hours installing a vast range of packages,
including an entire version of tetex, and a whole stack of others
that I didn't even know were related to pari-gp.
Then I tentatively typed in "pari-gp" - same thing.
I did a little bit of googling on the error message (Trace/BPT trap)
and something intriguing came up - it appears to be a Linux error
message relating to an incorrectly set bit in Altivec programs....
now somewhere, I vaguely recall reading that Tiger treats Altivec
differently to Panther... but I don't know enough about it to really
make sense of it.
One final bit of info: the OLD version of Pari, installed pre-Tiger,
works fine on Tiger.... luckily I took the precaution of moving /sw
rather than just gung-ho deleting it and starting to reinstall
everything from scratch!
