I'm using fink in an attempt to get the Umbrello UML modeler working.
Installing it from 'unstable' caused an installation of KDE 3.4.1 with
odd results.
When I start X11 and execute 'startkde &', it seems to go through all
the motions of working, but ends up in a state where all its windows
seem to be in the background and don't respond to mouse clicks or
keystrokes. This includes the bar at the bottom of the screen and its
K menu. If I create a new xterm, it becomes the focus for keystrokes
and I can run applications, but the moment I click on any window (xterm
or application), it too becomes background.
I've read the startup log and see a few complaints that might represent
problems:
_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
[...]
kwin: it looks like there's already a window manager running. kwin not
started.
[...]
kicker: KMiniPager: Call to KWinInterface::setDesktopLayout(int, int,
int) failed
[...]
kio: KNFSShare: Could not found exports file!
However, what makes this most interesting is that if I shut down X11
and start it again, everything seems to work reasonably well.
Sometimes I get a K menu and panel and sometimes not; sometimes I get a
warning dialog about a crash log being detected and sometimes not. But
either way, programs that depend on KDE start working at that point.
