I've removed my fink installation on a system upgrade, now I'm trying to
set it up again in MacOS X 10.4. "Tiger". I'v installed some stuff
outside fink and want to set up virtual packages. I've look at the info
boxes in fink commander and want to verify if I understood everything.
I'm going to install
1. system-xfree86-manual-install
to use Apple's X11.
Wrong. You don't install this, it is purely virtual like all the
system-xfree86-* packages. They show up automatically when you have
installed the right things in /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11. The
system-xfree86-manual-install package is special: it is never marked as
installed; its usefulness is of a more esoteric nature.
I need Apple's X11 SDK. How can I check if this is already installed? Is
this installed with XCode?
It is installed with Xcode, and it is installed by default, unlike
X11User.pkg which is an optional install with the Tiger system. You see
whether it is installed either by looking for the receipt in
/Library/Receipts/ or with "fink list x11". If the package x11-dev has a
p in front of it, you can be reasonably sure that you have X11SDK installed.
2. system-tetex to use tetex installed via the iInstaller.
3. system-ghostscript8 to use Ghostscript installed via the iInstaller.
These two are OK, although I don't know if the system-tetex package is
flexible enough to adapt to the latest changes in the i-installer
packages (AFAIK there exist now several versions of GWtex that install
things in different places).
Is that okay so far?
1 and 3 should allow me to install gv ("ghostview"), shouldn't it?
Yes.
