I've downloaded Fink, Fink Commander, Ethereal, and all the files needed. I thought that was all I needed to do. When I started looking

Well, if you want help, there is one more thing you need to do: Describe your system. Right now, from the information you are giving, we cannot even know which version of MacOSX you are running. You say on one hand:

for an application, I couldn't find one. I don't see an ethereal application, although I do see Tethereal. I started browsing the copius

This would imply that you are on Panther, MacOSX 10.3, because there was a problem like this in the original binary distribution 0.7.2. The problem has been fixed since, so you just need to run "Update descriptions" from your "Binary" menu in FinkCommander, and you will see ethereal version 0.10.12-11 in the binary column which you can then install. You don't need to run scanpackages for this.

On the other hand, you write:

documentation, and saw a comment about running Fink Commander: source --> scan packages, and got this: /usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.3/cc1plus is not executable!

The beginner archives casually mention downloading XCODE 2.1. If so,

This would mean you are on Tiger, MacOSX 10.4, because there is no Xcode-2.1 for Panther, Xcode-1.5 is the latest version there.

What is it, Panther or Tiger?

why isn't it in the fink packages. I'm not really up to download random code.

Calling Apple's official update to the developer tools that come with the MacOSX system disk "random code" is a bit rich.

My other comment is that I still have not seen documentation for beginner/beginners just looking for a total implementation... ala click on this, and it's installed ;-)

So, back to the source --> scan packages. I have 3 entries that say: "wrote 0 entries to output packages file". Is that good or bad? It sounds like I should just forget it.

Yes.
