There's no Linux window or anything like that--anything you install
via Fink is natively compiled for OS X. For best results:

1) Turn on the unstable trees (Fink Commander preferences)
2)  Run a Source->selfupdate (or selfupdate-rsync if you haven't been
using rsync selfupdating or CVS selfupdating)
3) Select the "bundle-gnome" package to install GNOME, and/or the
"bundle-kde-unified" package to install KDE.
4)  Use Source->Install.
5) While you're waiting for them to build, check out the section on
how to set up a ~/.xinitrc file -- that has examples about how to set
things up for KDE and GNOME:

http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/run-xfree86.php#xinitrc

You won't have access to every application, but you will be able to
use them alongside your commercial OS X stuff.
