There's no Linux window or anything like that--anything you install via Fink is natively compiled for OS X. For best results: 1) Turn on the unstable trees (Fink Commander preferences) 2) Run a Source->selfupdate (or selfupdate-rsync if you haven't been using rsync selfupdating or CVS selfupdating) 3) Select the "bundle-gnome" package to install GNOME, and/or the "bundle-kde-unified" package to install KDE. 4) Use Source->Install. 5) While you're waiting for them to build, check out the section on how to set up a ~/.xinitrc file -- that has examples about how to set things up for KDE and GNOME: http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/run-xfree86.php#xinitrc You won't have access to every application, but you will be able to use them alongside your commercial OS X stuff. -- Alexander K.
