Hmm. Some additional information might help.

(1) It seems I may have been premature in my assumption (based on  
watching the installation in progress) that it had updated  
ImageMagick v6.1.8. It had, rather, updated the shlibs for 6.1.8  
which I apparently had not removed.

(2) After shooting off the email I explored some more. I found that  
v6.2.8-1002 was available for Intel Macs, which it wasn't a few days  
ago. I immediately installed it upon discovery. (And subsequently  
recompiled my program with it's benefits.)

See (1) above ... I had done that, just not "fink remove imagemagick- 
shlibs".

That is possible, but it is klutzy. The update-all feature is very  
handy. It's not perfect, as evidenced by some of the FAQ's on the  
fink site. But it can be a tremendous time saver.
