I installed Fink a while back, but because of a proxying issue at work
could never really get it working. And I was afraid I had messed it up
in the process. So when the proxying issue got resolved, I began to
try again by uninstalling fink (sudo rm -rf /sw, according to the faq)
and reinstalling.

When I try to install 0.8.1, I'm not able to select a destination
disk. My main partition (OS X 10.4.8) has the big red exclamation
point saying

You cannot install Fink on this volume. Cannot perform symlink test on
this volume because of a permissions problem. Try performing the
"Repair Disk Permissions" function in Disk Utility.

Indeed, when I first checked there were permisssions issues which I
repaired. Since then, however, I still get the same error message,
although Disk Utility now finds no errors in the disk's permissions. I
have rebooted for good measure.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Matt
