That path should show up in @INC, though--maybe verify this via 
"perl5.8.6 -V"

If @INC looks OK, check out what Fink uses for its own perl module 
builds under:

http://www.finkproject.org/doc/packaging/reference.php#fields (under the 
"Install phase" heading, InstallScript item)
