Thanks for replying. Everything looked fine in @INC. I then read that  
sudo doesn't pass all env variables
and began to wonder. I then saw Chris Dolan's post on the Devel list  
and realized I had installed 10.4.9 shortly before I encountered
the error. Using his trick, my problem was solved.
