I don't have openssh installed on any of my machines.

What did you mean when you said of fink "I have the latest ssh version it offers" then?

What is the result of "which ssh". If its not "/usr/bin/ssh" that's your issue.

I guess I may have jumped in the middle of the conversation without fully knowing or understanding the issue. I read a comment about not knowing about Fink and ssh being broken. I have Fink installed and prefer it's use, so thought I might be able to contribute.

When I perform "which ssh" I get "/usr/bin/ssh". When I perform "ssh - v" I get "OpenSSH_4.5p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7l 28 Sep 2006". (The result to both of these are the same under both Tiger and Leopard.) When I do a "fink list openssh" (which looks for available packages named openssh and lists them) I get this result:

openssh 4.3p2-5 Secure shell (remote login) client and server openssh-hpn 4.2p1-3 Secure shell (high performance) client and server

So the current version I am running is 4.5p1 but the latest that fink lists is 4.3p2-5. It almost looks like fink is reporting an older version than what the system has installed. Not sure why that would be.
