John,

If you look in your ".xinitrc" file (in your user directory) you  
should find a line that probably reads "exec twm". I would comment  
that out (install a "#" at the beginning of the line) and add a line  
that looks like "exec gnome-session" or whatever the command is that  
starts the gnome window manager.
