thanks for your help,

I put the line exec gnome-session into the .xinitrc file I still get a message:
_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
SESSION_MANAGER=local/John-B.local:/tmp/.ICE-unix/6828
/usr/X11R6/bin/twm: another window manager is already running on screen 0?
/usr/X11R6/bin/twm: unable to find any unmanaged screens

The regular xterm window manager is opening. Is it possible that the path was
set up wrong? Here is what I get when I do a printenv PATH in terminal:
 ralphcra% printenv PATH
/usr/local/bin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin

Thanks for your help,

John
