OBVIOUSLY, the problem is pdflib, but do not know "how to fix it"
or get it to compile. Ugg...any help would be so appreciated.

I can confirm this on my own system.
Since the grace version in the unstable tree uses a more current
pdflib (and builds on 10.5) that probably ought to get moved over
to stable.
