In the future, feel free to remove the part of an error message that
deals with unpacking the source tarball, since that's typically only the
source of an error if there's a mis-named file in stuff fink runs after
the main build.

You may be better off with "fink -l install packagename" to get a log
file. (in /tmp)

Also, for debugging purposes, "semi-verbose" isn't as useful as "fully
verbose". Maybe try "fink -vvv -l build g77" and see if the output in
that log file is any different.

Normally the unstable tree has been OK, but for Snow Leopard packages
there may well not work. This appears to be such a case.

The relevant portion of the output appears to be

If you need a Fortran compiler soon (i.e. before the maintainer is able
to fix this), I might suggest the gcc44 package, which has the gfortran
compiler. Unless, of course, something else you need wants g77 as a
dependency.
