Snow Leopard comes with 5.10, and messing with the system's perl is a
very bad idea when using Fink. The possibility of it ceasing

Javier's suggestion was to use _Fink_ to install Perl, and others have
reported something which worked for them was to set the Perl interpreter
for Fink Commander to be /usr/bin/perl5.8.9, which also exists on Snow
Leopard. We never tell people to overwrite system stuff (other than the
unfortunate issues with X11 on Leopard).

"fink list pidgin" yielding nothing is a separate issue altogether. As per

http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/pidgin

it exists only in the unstable tree on 10.6 as of yet.
