Instead of trying the sample package, try one that is in the Fink
distribution.  Try "fink --build-as-nobody rebuild fink".  That works
for me on 10.5.8/i386 with Fink-0.29.10-41.  If that doesn't work on
your machines, then there may be something strange going on with your
configuration on all of thejm.

One possibility that occurs to me is that you're not running Fink from
an account with full administrative privileges.
