I ran disk utility and there were an inordinate number of mixed up permissions,
which were fixed. But still fink would not bootstrap - the same error message
was produced. Reading the diagnostics, I figured that the problem maybe has
something to do with multiple filesystems or sharepoints, but disconnecting
from the server function did not help the bootstrapping process. I probably
should have tried turning off sharepoints, but rationalized that this process
worked once with the initial installation, and that starting again from scratch
would be faster.

So, I re-installed the server system software, updated it, and installed
developer tools, and then went straight to bootstrapping fink (i.e. before
messing around with server functions) and it has now worked and I am beginning
to install packages.

So, I do not think it is a problem with tar or the unzipping of the file, nor
having multiple discs. I am guessing it has something to do with sharing and
associated permission complexities. I did note that the "._." and "._sw" files
were popping up in the root directory every time I tried the bootstrapping
process previously (i.e. when it failed), but those files are not present in
the root directory after the successful bootstrap.

Thanks for the help!

Brian
