You shouldn't need both "fink selfupdate" and "fink selfupdate-rsync".
That combination is only necessary for a brand new installation using
the 10.5 binary installer.

"fink index -f" was needed immediately after using the 10.5 installer
because of a timestamp issue.  You normally don't need to run this.

> fink scanpackages

"fink scanpackages" is mostly irrelevant for new package installs.  Its
purpose is to make packages which you have built on your system known to
apt-get--and it gets run by default after every install operation.
