Ah.  I'd forgotten that the unstable tree sequence in the FAQ called for
an initial "fink selfupdate" and to use "fink index -f".

And you're right; there's no harm done in repeating it.  You just wind
up taking more time for operations that don't do anything. "fink
selfupdate" and "fink selfupdate-rsync" do the same thing once rsync
updating is activated.  And running "fink scanpackages" only needs to be
done once, to set apt-get up to look in the unstable tree; after that it
gets run automatically.
