Only XCode4 costs money, and Fink currently does not support XCode4 
because it changes several underlying Fink assumptions as to what tools 
are available for building packages (such as the compiler versions). 
And it is unknown if XCode4 will still cost money once Lion is 
officially released.  XCode3 (and 2) is still free and supports all the 
currently available official versions of OS X (10.4-10.6)

And what exactly would be the benefit of putting Fink in the App Store? 
  How is that easier than downloading the installer from the Fink web 
site?  And how does XCode4 not being free lead to putting Fink in the 
App Store?
