Way further up.  None of what you've posted involves perl588, and that's
what is having problems.

Fink commander has a preference option to capture a log, so you might
want to enable that.

The above gets run after you build literally _anything_, and so there's
not any information there.

(perl588 got updated in _unstable_ four days ago)

I personally prefer _not_ having people send a message on -users and
- -beginners and cc -core, -devel, or -gnome-core until we get to the
point of actually knowing what needs to be fixed in a package.  The
message that comes up following a failed build doesn't distinguish
between a package whose maintainer is an individual and one which is
maintained by an entity within the Fink project.

It's the other way around:  xboard carries a dependency on either
crafty, gnuchess, or sjeng.  But yeah, you should be able to use
gnuchess or sjeng with xboard until crafty gets fixed.
