Thank you for your quick response. I am afraid I may have bigger problems than
the one I asked about. I tried to look at the config.log file as you
suggested, using nedit, my favorite editor, and found that nedit is no longer
working. The error message I got when I tried to start nedit was

I am running OS X 10.5.8 on an intel MacBook, but it appears to me that I have
installed a powerpc version of fink. The system info shows this, I think:
Distribution version: selfupdate-rsync Sun Dec 16 13:42:25 2012, 10.5, powerpc
This seems to have been working fine until I upgraded fink, but now I think it
has come back to bite me in the butt. I remember worrying about it a couple of
years ago when I got the intel machine, which I think inherited its OS from my
old G4 PowerBook using Time Machine. Can't really remember now. I let it
slide because all the programs I use, like nedit, xfig, xmgrace, and gv all
worked fine.
If this is the problem, what is the solution? Should I uninstall fink
completely, then try the 10.5 installation again? Uh, what is the easiest way
to uninstall, if it comes to that?
What a mess. Thanks for any help you can give me.
