Renaming and brand identity is a big subject. How far do you want this to go? Do you envision moving fink into the mainstream Apple user base? If so, a re-branding is very good idea. While I like fink the tool, I work as a technical marketeer and brand strategy fundamentals recommend that product names have a relation to the benefits/functions the product provides--at least to the target market. There are exceptions, but generally the successful exceptions are usually backed by deep-pockets that overcome the non-sequitur in the name. I don't think fink has that luxury. The German word for finch gives me absolutely no clue as to its function of the product. Even finch is better ;-). However, that all stated, if the vision for fink is smaller than Apple's worldwide installed base and I think it is (especially given the technical knowledge required to get it installed and working), then renaming is not critical. The brand is already known to much of the target market. My $0.02.

You need to decide whether you wish to "brand" the name fink such as "googala.com stands for fink.." or use the name Fink in the domain name for recognition value.

I am open for more suggestion, ultimately it is not my decision anyways *smiles*
