Well I am glad that I could at least make you happy by completing one
action *grins*

Age:
	how fink will use this ?

First of all, you need not answer this question. Until all of the
questions have been decided on, I am not even going to look at which
should be mandatory and which should not be mandatory.

To me it is important, if I have to create documentation for a user
group which is 40-50 years old and computer illiterate or a user group
which is between 20 and 25 and has a degree in Supercomputing. Of
course I am exaggerating. Since the question is not mandatory and it
is a question of mere interest, I am not going to remove it.

Occupation:
- -> Student
- -> IT-Professional
- -> Academic Staff
- -> Media Professional
- -> Desktop Publishing
- -> Server Administrator
- -> Other
as you said (in reply to Patrick Nf) :

It is interesting for me to know who uses this piece of software,
because occupation and educational background do give me a way to
gauge the user and their abilities. I am sure you know that after
such a login time with a marketing company.
"give me a way to gauge the user and their abilities" what for !

Program design, What kind of error messages should I send? How detailed
do they have to be? How much can I assume the user to know when writing
documentation? There are many things I can think of. Of course this
offers no general way to gauge the way something should be done, but it
could give us a raw idea. Once more, it is no mandatory and thus
interesting to have.

Which other operating systems have you used/ ared you using?
(this is a matrix questions offering
Use it daily / Use it often / have used it / Use it infrequently /
Have not used it
on the column and the operating system name on the lines.)
Use it Daily | Use it often | Use it infrequently | Have used it |
Have not used it
Linux
FreeBSD
NetBSD
OpenBSD
Berkely BSD
Solaris
HP-UX
VMS
BeOS
Windows 95/98/XP
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows 2000 Server

((Please do complete this list))
	again how fink will use this ? I'm curious :-)

It is surely interesting to know if Fink is one of the reasons a "Let#s
assume" debian user has no qualms about usinf Mac os X now. Or if the
people who have owned a mac the past 10 years are no the majority of
fink users.
This alone also offers me a way to set a kind of standard when writing
docu. For example I would expect a Linux user to know what a command
lien argument is. I do not expetc a mac os 9 user to know that.

Does Fink help to make you daily bussiness easier?
- -> Yes
- -> No
	as Dave pointed that's a marketing question

Actually I did ask this question for those involded with Fink. It
simply might feel good to see "yes" from 20 people.
The question is arguable and will probably go to the /dev/null bin.

How useful is Fink to you?
(presents a scale from 1 to 8)
- -> a bit # # # # # # # # a lot
perhaps put this one right before the "which new feature" and add a
"what do you dislike the most" or so.

Ordering ha snot been decided yet, but that is a very good idea.

What do you use it for?
- -> System Administration
- -> Installing XFree Applications
- -> Running Gnome
- -> Running KDE
- -> Using Unix command line applications
- -> Other

How many computer running Fink do you own.
- --> none
- --> one
- --> two
- --> three
- --> four
- --> five
- --> between 5 and ten
- --> more than 10
	can we use this to improve fink ?

The above question, about the " Running Gnome" and so on, yes. Because
it could influence the decision of a package porter to rather port
Gnome packages because many people run Gnome than some obscure command
line program.

I agree, the Computer questions are statistical, not mandatory and thus
I am really wary about removing them.
How many computer running Fink are you responsible for?
- --> one
- --> two
- --> three
- --> four
- --> five
- --> between 5 and ten
- --> between 10 and 30
- --> more than 30
	ditto

se above.
For how long have you been using Fink?
	-> less than a month
	-> two months
	-> 3
	-> 4
	-> 5
	-> 6
	-> more than 6
	who cares ? :-)

Well this would be up to the developers to explain, yet I do care what
user base I have and for how long I have had it. If 90% check, that
they have been usiing Fink fpr less than a month and they are on 0.5.0a
they probably started with 0.4.0 and I can start asking myself why.

How often do you use Fink?
     -> More than once a day
     -> Once a day
    -> More than once a week
    -> Once a week
    -> More than once a month
    -> Once a month
    -> Infrequently

This simply gauges how useful and important Fink is to their daily
business, it was a suggested question
How often do you use packages installed by Fink?
    -> More than once a day
     -> Once a day
    -> More than once a week
    -> Once a week
    -> More than once a month
    -> Once a month
    -> Infrequently
	ditto

See above.
To whom would you recommend Fink?
- --> Old time Macintosh user
- --> Anyone running Mac Os X
- --> System Administrator
- --> IT-Professionals
- --> Media Professional
Might want to add a 'why' question.

Very good idea. Free form :)

<snip>

Would you find it useful to have Fink distributed differently?
- --> On a CD
- --> bundled with Apple Software
- --> From more than the Sourceforge mirrors
- --> via Cvsup
	see Dave's comment

see my reply to david.

How would you like to help Fink?
- ->Are you willing to participate in more surveys to improve Fink?
- ->Would you like Fink to 'speak' your native tongue ?
- ->Would you consider being a translator?
- ->Would you help writing documentation for Fink?
	ditto

ditto

I would like to add, that I am recording the email only because I
wish to be able to contact those people who answer the question "How
would you like to help fink". I am not going to make that a
mandatory answer, because I will explicitly state in the header why
the email is being recorded.
	then why don't you put it alongside this question ?

Because that is not possible with the system I am using. The email
question could be just below this one though. Thanks.
How would you like to help Fink?
- ->Are you willing to participate in more surveys to improve Fink?

- ->Would you consider being a translator?
- ->Would you help writing documentation for Fink?
Email : [ ] If you want Fink to contact you.

The header will have the following key points explained.

a) Why the data is being collected
and that is ?, and something more specific than "to know who uses
fink, why they use it and what they think of it".
How will actually Fink benefit from it.

I'll be very specific. I will try to explain it in all detail, yet for
now I need to get the questions down pat and then I can start writing a
disclaimer.

b) That it is not being passed on in its raw form
c) That it might be show to third parties in a filtered way
	what's a filtered way ?

It simply means, that the "age" might not be shown and for sure the
"email" will not be shown.

d) It will ask for consent
	how will you do if the user choose not to give his email ?

Then he does not. it's not his duty to give one. Yet by answering the
survey and pressing the submit button he will agree to certain legal
terms. The law department of our company is still working on those.

e) It will explain why the age and email are being recorded along
with the occupation
	may I know for the age ?

see above.
Please do help me once more.
	I love to help by criticizing ;-)

Do go ahead, I do not mind the least bit as long as it stays on an
impersonal level.

- - Face me and you shall surely perish.
